"Light glorifies everything. It transforms and ennobles the most commonplace and ordinary subjects. The object is nothing; Light is everything."

- Léonard Misonne.

Though I would hardly call my life uninteresting, I doubt what you're after here is a long story about photography and finding my calling in the world. Sufficient to say that I have arrived at the wonderful point of being able to say I quite literally have the career of my dreams. There is nothing else, not even close, that I would rather do.

In everything I photograph, light plays the most important role. Learning to appreciate how it changes and raises any given scene has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Applying that knowledge to produce eye catching, emotionally-charged photographs is just something else. This is relevant in all my work, and not confined to just the travel and landscape galleries. Ultimately, photography is all about emotion, whether in recording it or using skill and vision to lift ordinary subjects into something more; something that requires or engenders a deeper response from the viewer.

Aside from the usual commissioned work, I am available for one-on-one workshops, based for now in Cambridge, but ultimately this will extend to more exotic locations. My photographs have appeared in newspapers and international magazines including National Geographic and Der Spiegel, I have given talks at the London Natural History Museum, and some of my finer work has been rewarded with international competition top-spots and final shortlists.

If you're interested in my photography, in any sense, you can get in touch via the contact page, or just content yourself to browse the images displayed on this site. If you interested in buying prints, calendars, or hiring me as a photographer for whatever you need, head toward the prints page for an idea of services and charges.

In any case, thankyou for stopping by!

James

A quick note on Equipment...

All cameras have the same purpose: to assist in capturing the spirit of what the photographer visualised in his minds eye.

Of course, it's not the camera that makes the image but the photographer. The Equipment is a means to an end whereas 'Seeing' is everything.

- Bruce Percy.

I photograph with several systems - both digital full frame Canon on the fantastic 5D mkII, and medium format film on a trusty velvia-loaded Mamiya 645. I currently use the Hi-tech filter system, finding it an inexpensive and reliable neutral-density source. A Velbon Lux-I-F tripod keeps everything steady, as well as packing up incredibly light.

My gear and camera choice will depend entirely on the circumstances and situations that I am photographing. Digital is both more convienient and more forgiving, and takes first place for commissioned and portraiture work. Film has an entirely different feel, and has fast become my weapon of choice when travelling and photographing landscapes. But both, ultimately, are just equipment...
